Clean Sleep Means Healthy Sleep
Our pillows and duvets are in the closest contact with our bodies all night. Over time, skin oils, sweat, dead skin cells, dust mites and even bacteria build up. Neglected bedding can cause allergies, skin irritation and poor sleep.
So how should you clean them, and how often?
1. How Often Should Pillows Be Washed?
– Pillows should be washed every 3–6 months, in a way that suits their filling.
– Fibre and goose down pillows can usually be machine washed.
– For allergy sufferers, more frequent washing (every 2–3 months) is recommended.
– Changing your pillowcase every week is very important for hygiene.
Tip: Adding an extra protector cover to your pillow can help it last longer.
2. How Often Should Duvets Be Washed?
– Duvets should be cleaned once or twice a year.
– Summer duvets can be washed at the end of the season, and winter duvets at the start of summer.
– For large duvets that don’t fit in the machine, professional dry cleaning is a good option.
– Fibre duvets can usually be machine washed, while goose down duvets need a special low-temperature cycle.
Tip: Airing your duvet often reduces moisture and odours.
3. Choosing a Detergent and Washing Tips
– Use a fragrance-free, gentle detergent
– Fabric softener is not recommended, especially for goose down products
– Lukewarm water at 30°C is ideal
– Tumble dry on low heat with tennis balls or wool dryer balls to keep the loft
– Never wash at home if you don’t have a large-capacity tumble dryer
4. Drying and Storage
– Dry completely; never leave damp
– Once dry, store in a clean bag
– Choose fabric bags rather than plastic ones
– Store filled products without compressing them
